July 2011 - Sonisphere-Festival - Knebworth/UK

Planning for the weekend was a disaster, two weeks of drinking training camp and a lot of chaos around it. There was just not enough time. Not that we saw it coming months in advance, but why do it right now when you can postpone it, hehe... So we had to put up the tent in the attic just beforehand, it was raining outside, seal all the seams with silicone glue and then powder them, that was probably the biggest thing that had to be done, but that was also done on Tuesday evening...

Well, on Wednesday I left the company on time at the end of core working hours and went to the BMW dealer to hand over the motorcycle. New suspension, new tires, and while we were at it, he should also do the customer service at the same time, so I can at least drive myself in peace when I get back...

Then we went back to the pension for a short while, got my grandpa's old military bag, which was already packed and ready, and then I went to get some beer. On the train to Lindau I had the first beer - it was already late, around nine in the evening - and then we refilled it with two more in the pizzeria.

Then it was time to sleep, after all we were going to the restaurant of the Golden M for breakfast at seven the next morning, and of course to have a beer, from a can of course. On the way to the airport, like last year, we had another beer, for sure, even the driver, and another one at the airport, so that we didn't have to lug too many euros with us to the island...
At boarding we met two guys who won their tickets for the festival from Dornbirn, a small city close by, which was unfortunate or inconvenient as it turned out later, and then we were off, because over 90% of all Ryanair flights are on time...

And we continued towards the festival grounds, but only in the direction of the grounds. Luckily, our two Austrian friends had rented a car and we spontaneously joined them as passengers, so we went to the supermarket first, and what can I say, the small shopping cart was enough, there were only four of us... It was almost too small, and we activated a second cart at the checkout to be on the safe side... it doesn't cost anything...
Well, and then it got really funny, because packing four people plus the shopping for four days for a festival into a VW Up is like an exciting game of Tetris, inconvenient, as I said...

And since we still had time, and were hungry - after all, there were already four beers before twelve - we got off the motorway and ended up in a nice little town where we had lunch, and this time we didn't drink beer, but an ale...

The stuff  called beer or ale, is just horrible, brrr, "isn't the Servezia lukewarm enough for you?", maybe you remember Asterix!?

A little later we went on to the site, and oh Jebus, last year we only arrived on Friday and there wasn't as much going on as here on Thursday afternoon. And after queuing for almost 2 hours we made it to the camping site and opened some beer before we put up the tent...

And the photo beside was taken after an hour of queuing. And even if you can't really see it, the queue, or rather the mass, stretches about 80 to 100 meters further back and also to the front to the check-in where we picked up our wristbands...

Luckily we had a "transporter" and didn't have to lug everything around at once, but were able to secure a spot in the sun to put up the tent. Only then did we get the rest of our luggage, mainly "drinks", out of the car. Since the concerts didn't start until the next day, we and the other two first devoted ourselves to the bottle of gin - very British.

After we solved this problem (gin), we grabbed our beer and went back to the tent, strolled around the festival grounds a bit and then the day was pretty much over. Strange, I wonder why that came from, we hardly drank anything...

And then the next day we went to the concerts - after a proper breakfast (beer).

And even though I was a little further back in the crowd here at Anthrax, I got my first bruises two bands later at Slayer and then Metallica - Pogo is still alive..

But Slayer, Metallica and Anthrax were of course not the only highlights at the festival. Megadeath, Volbeat, Bad Religion and Sisters of Mercy contributed to a great line-up.

There were some funny men around too, but we'd rather leave the girls who pee standing up alone...

yummy, very tasty

There was also delicious food, even if you wouldn't expect it from the Brits, and who would have thought that chips with cheddar cheese and baked beans would be delicious - a culinary delight that I don't want to withhold from you...

Well just the rest, I was hungry and wasn't able to take some pictures before.

Well, then I can't remember exactly why we stopped taking photos, it could be because of the beer that was constantly flowing in large quantities, so it's no surprise that the in-house trash can eventually gave up... (But we didn't kicked it, honestly!)

Well, and before we knew it, the four days on the island were over, and after many, many liters of beer, we had to make our way home again.
The only problem was that we run into a small traffic jam just before Lindau. A truck wanted to crash down the Argen bridge... Well, and then we sat there on the highway and realized that we looked like pigs - AND even were dirty...

and the stupid thing, sitting there made us thirsty, and sometime later, the last day came to an end after, um, x beers...
It was wonderful, I'd love to do it again next year...

So, and even though I didn't want to drink any more alcohol this week, I'm still going to treat myself to a scotch...

Greetings, your Ecki
